The John Hay Writing Studio

JHWS Logo (2)

In a rustic one-room cabin nestled in the trees atop Brewster's Dry Hill stands the writing studio belonging to the great naturalist, author, and conservationist John Hay. When Hay died in 2011 at the age of 95 he left behind a legacy that bound together his two loves, literature and conservation. Brewster Conservation Trust has preserved Hay’s studio and is honoring his legacy by offering the space to Cape Cod writers who require a place in which to work on literary projects of their own.

After a successful pilot program in the summer of 2024, the program is being expanded for the 2025 season. One-week retreats (daytime hours only) will be available free of charge to full and part-time residents of Cape Cod from May to October. Applications will be accepted beginning March 1, 2o25. There is a $10 application fee.

Fall 2024 Newsletter

This story started three generations ago when Ralph and Blanche Doble purchased over 70 acres along Satucket Rd. in 1955. Summer after summer, the couple’s son, five daughters, and 18 grandchildren would visit. Over the years, the land was subdivided and each Doble child received a house lot of approximately ten acres. The daughters each […]
