Eddy School science at the vernal pool!
It’s not often one purchase can benefit three populations, but that’s what the Brewster Conservation Trust has done in a few acres off Main Street. This small area preserves a vernal pool, gives wildlife a place of respite and provides a living science lab for students of the Eddy Elementary School.
Since vernal pools have no fish, eggs of salamanders and frogs depend on their safety. Students learn not only about the plants and animals that depend on wetlands but also about how living things depend on each other, that all nature is connected.
- Figure 1 The Vernal Pool Trail behind the Eddy Elementary School is ready for exploration. In November 2017 Science Teacher McKendree explains what the 4th graders will see in their field trip to a place of wonder just short walk from their classroom.
- Figure 2 The Brewster Conservation Trust bought the property and prepared a trail from the school yard to the vernal pool. Students studied the trail map before setting out.
- Figure 3 Audubon Science teacher Spring Beckhorn shows a red maple leaf, a typical tree in a wetland area.
- Figure 4 Students find other samples of wetland plants.
