Most land trusts are private, nonprofit corporations, Land trusts are not “trusts” in the legal sense, and may also be called “conservancies,” “foundations,” or any number of other names descriptive of their purpose.
Land trusts are one of the primary ways communities can protect themselves from excessive development, preserve the places people need and love, protect wildlife, and safeguard the future. Land trusts also make it possible for landowners to derive tax benefits while conserving all or part of their land in perpetuity.
