Freemans Aquifer (Freemans Way)
This area is a collection of lands purchased over time to protect the town’s water supply. Originally planned for development, the properties now preserve a record of early transit routes including cart paths and crisscrossing foot trails. The red trail winds through a hilly pitch pine and oak forest with a huckleberry understory and a scattering of beech trees. The blue trail cuts through an even-aged pine barren. Much of the blue trail follows what had been cleared for a road, providing for a flat and level walk. An overlook of Cahoon Pond is located at the southernmost portion of the trail.
Park in the lot on the north side of Route 137, or along the south side of Freemans Way.
About our leader: Phil Kyle has dedicated his life to the study and public education of the natural world, especially birds. He has led programs at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History and Cape Cod National Seashore, among many others. He is a past president of the Cape Cod Bird Club and author of a weekly column about birds for the Cape Cod Times. Phil, a long-time high school science teacher and passionate naturalist, is happiest outdoors introducing others to the natural world.

Let’s have some fun!
We’re celebrating summer’s end with fun, food, family and friends. Join us at our Eddy Sisters property (home to the Brewster Community Garden and the Children’s Garden). Enjoy the wildflower meadow, wooded walking trail, Outdoor Classroom and our young-but-thriving heirloom apple orchard. We’ll have self-directed games, activities, and nature crafts, one of Brewster’s favorite entertainers, and some of the best pizza on Cape Cod. Oh, and ice cream!

Fall Mushroom Walk
They appear mysteriously overnight in sizes, shapes, and colors that are sometimes familiar and sometimes bewildering. They are known to facilitate underground communication between trees and plants and do the vitally important work of recycling the earth’s organic material. No wonder mushrooms and other fungi are the subject of so much interest and fascination.
Join us on the Eddy Sisters trail for a foray into forest fungi led by Rich Pouder, president of the Cape Cod Mycologcal Society.
Rich will explain the preferences, habits, and habitat of the mushroom and related fungi species that grow in our local woods and forests. Bring a camera and/or a sketchbook to capture the intricate shapes and shades of these forest dwellers. This is not a foraging walk but an observation and learning walk.
Friday Footsteps: Crosby Landing
The barrier beach of Crosby Landing is a dynamic collection of ecosystems, with fluctuating bird populations, sand formations, and seasonal habitats, including salt marsh, brackish marsh, dune and outer beach habitats. This walk will reveal a snapshot of what is happening here in the early fall.

Walk n’ Write (A Write Out Event)
We’re heading to the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History for a Write Out! Write Out invites everyone to step outside the walls of classrooms, homes, and workspaces to write and connect. This event encourages writers to draw inspiration from the world around them through place-based writing and sharing, deepening connections to place, nature, and community.
Our Walk n’ Write will consist of small group trail walks, each led by a John Hay Writing Studio writer, and time to write, share, and discuss your experience with others.
This program is offered in partnership with the Brewster Ladies’ Library and the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History.
