The Backus Overlook
A section of scenic Rt. 6A in the center of town is about to get a whole lot more scenic. With the removal of two vacant buildings at 2342 Main St., passersby will enjoy a lush landscape that includes a freshwater pond, a wet meadow, wooded upland, and broad expanse of wildlife habitat. Additionally, a cleverly designed viewing platform will be built to allow for closer access to the site, yet travelers on 6A will see only the open landscape.
The new project is called the Backus Overlook and it blends two forms of preservation, historical and environmental. One of the buildings to be removed once served as Schoolhouse #3 for Brewster children. Too dilapidated to be restored to use, the building’s timbers will be salvaged and used by BCT and the Brewster Historical Society for various purposes. Ecological and environmental preservation will be achieved through new native plantings and land stewardship practices to control invasive vines, promote biodiversity, and improve sources of food and habitat along this key corridor of pollinator activity.
The Heart of the Community
With close proximity to commercial areas and bicycle and pedestrian access points, the new Backus Overlook will offer the public an accessible encounter with nature just steps away from Main Street. The surrounding green space will pay fitting tribute to Brewster’s reputation as the Conservation Town. Accessibility features such as stairless design, handicap parking, a bike rack, and a hydration station will create a space appealing to and approachable by all Brewster residents and visitors.
